When Goals Don’t Work

Why do some people succeed in reaching their aspirations and others fail? There are many reasons including not knowing how to set goals, the goals are not specific, achievable, or measurable or they quit too soon. Let’s assume though, that you know how to set goals and have clearly defined the results. Why then, do you sometimes not succeed? It could be that you have the wrong goal, or are missing a burning desire to have it. Maybe you believe you can’t reach it. If you stop short before you arrive, only you are responsible for not getting what you want.

I’ve observed in my coaching practice over the past four years, and in my own life as well, that the key components to success are that you must have a PASSIONATE PURPOSE, that is, a burning desire to have it, the BELIEF that you can have it and a PLAN that you persistently act upon.

PASSIONATE PURPOSE
A key quality you must possess to win, is definiteness of purpose: knowing what you want and having a burning desire to have it. Purpose is the starting point from which you begin. When the passion is great enough, the goal takes on an animation and then you can go for it!

Don’t let dream stealers intimidate you should you meet with temporary defeat. Mistakes bring with them equivalent success. Thomas Edison failed ten thousand times in his dream that a lamp could be operated by electricity. “Practical dreamers” do not give up. Decide what you truly want, and create a white heat of desire for having it. The impulse of strong desire does not accept the word impossible.

BELIEF
No one is ready for anything until they believe they can have it. The state of mind must be belief, not mere hoping or wishing. Napoleon Hill in his book “Think and Grow Rich” says, “No more effort is required to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than is required to accept misery and poverty.” Belief is the starting point of all you desire. It is a well known fact that whatever you tell yourself becomes your reality. Note the emphasized words in the verse, “ But soon or late the man who wins is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!”

PERSISTENCE TO ACTION
Plans transform desire from your imagination to manifestation in the here and now. To bring goals to achievement, you must take responsibility for the results by taking action. Unfortunately, many people dream the dream, even write it down, but fail to act consistently and persistently on it. If you neglect to make the start, or stop before you arrive, no one is to blame but you.

It is at this point that many of us create alibis, all the reasons we can’t or won’t take action. It takes self-discipline and habit. Most of my clients hire me as their coach because they know that only action brings results. They want their efforts to produce the best results and they know that part of coaching is accountability for action. If there is something wrong with your plan, don’t quit, change the plan and keep the goal in focus.

Those that have acquired great successes did a certain amount of dreaming, wishing, desiring and planning before their success manifested. Why do some succeed at their goals and others don’t? Those that succeed decided what they wanted, worked themselves into a burning desire to have it, believed they could have it and persisted in creating or revising their plans until they found the ones that worked.
