How Resilient Are You?

How many times lately have you noticed yourself over-reacting to a person or situation? Do you ever feel panicked about changes being thrown at you at work? If you’re like most American’s who juggle their time endlessly or burn the candle at both ends, you need more resilience, the ability to adapt and persevere when things get out of kilter. The truth is, life includes adversity. There are daily hassles and sometimes major setbacks in life. Resilience is key to success at work and fulfillment in life.

Can you boost your resilience? You bet. It’s all about changing the way you think about adversity. Identify your thinking style and you can change the lens through which you view the world.

You know how resilient people seem to soar through life in spite of what life puts in front of them? These resilient people even seek out new and challenging experiences because they know that it’s only through pushing their limits that they will grow and expand to be the best they can be. They feel anxiety and doubt, but they have learned to keep these from overwhelming them. The word failure is not one they embrace for themselves.

Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatte, in their book, “The Resilience Factor”, offer a system to finding your inner strength and overcoming life’s hurdles. They say “Know Thyself, Then Change”. Here are some highlights:

==>You Are What You Think. When confronted with a problem, are you surprised by how you react or wish you could respond differently? Do you assume that you know the facts of a situation, only to find out later that you misinterpreted them? To respond effectively to the adversity, identify your “in the moment” beliefs by “listening” to your thoughts, identifying what you say to yourself when faced with a challenge, and understanding how your thoughts affect your behavior. Tune into your reactions and you can redirect your course to better resilience.

==>Avoid Thinking Traps. When things go wrong, do you automatically blame yourself or others? Do you jump to conclusions? Do you assume you know what the other person is thinking? In an adverse situation you can slow down your reaction, see the bigger picture and separate your feelings from the facts. Identify the mistakes that undermine your thinking and you can become more resilient when faced with adversity.

==>Detect Iceberg Beliefs. These are deep set beliefs about achievement, acceptance and control such as “Failure is a sign of weakness”, “I always want people to think the best of me”, or “People can’t be trusted”. These beliefs can inhibit your flexibility in any given situation and distort reality. When your “in the moment” beliefs don’t explain your reactions, you may be dealing with underlying beliefs about who you are and how you handle adversity.

The secret to resilience lies in accurate thinking, not positive thinking. You can teach yourself to better handle setbacks and to enthusiastically approach challenges. It requires commitment to change. My solopreneur and small business clients often hire me to make big changes and overcome the limitations that keep them from the success they desire. For those willing to commit to the journey, you can overcome weaknesses, enhance strengths, and develop resilience for more vitality, interest, and inspiration in your life.
