How to Create Success
Jack Canfield, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, is one of my favorite motivators. I was on a conference call he hosted the other night about how to change your life for greater success. This article is to summarize the information he shared on the call.
In Jack’s career, he has interviewed literally hundreds of the world’s most successful people and found commonalities among all of them: they take 100% responsibility in their life, they hang out with people who are actualizing where they want to be, and they maximize their time to spend as much of it as possible on their genius work.
Let’s take a closer look at each one of these points:
1. Take 100% responsibility in your life. This is the number one ingredient to success and it means that you must give up blaming, complaining and depending on others for your success in life. If you don’t like the way something is, try the equation E + R = O or the event + the response = the outcome. If you don’t like the outcome, you must either change the event or your response to the event.
As an example, let’s say you are unhappy about the outcome of a goal. Assuming the goal is a good one, (specific, measurable, realistic) and you really want it, you can do a couple of things. You may consider changing your plan to attain the goal (change the event), or accept that you missed the mark and commit again (your response to the situation). Change one of those and you will change the outcome.
2. Successful people only hang out with other successful people. Make a list of everyone that you hang out with. They are either negative or positive influences in your life. Bottom line, stop spending time with negative people. Hang out with people who are actualizing where you want to be in your life and business. Make it a goal to spend time with at least one new person each week who is where you want to be—spend one on one time with them or listen to their tapes, read their books. Watch for those that inspire you.
3. There are only three things that we have control over in life
· Our imagination. Visualize the success you want as if it were true.
· Our thoughts. Create only thoughts that get you toward your goal—I am brilliant, I eat only healthy food, etc.
· Our behavior. 90% of your behavior is habitual and unless you change the actions that are impeding your success, no growth occurs. Changing behavior is a main reason that my clients hire me or any coach. Most of us have weaknesses that keep us from achieving what we want. You can’t get great change without great investment.
4. Organize your days so that you are focused on your genius work—the highest and bests use of your time. Those activities that produce the greatest results in the shortest amount of time. Your genius work is your greatest leverage.
Organize your days into three types:
· Focus days. These bring the best results. These days are focused on your unique abilities/genius work. Examples include delivering talks, making a sales presentation, working on your business plan.
· Prep/buffer days: These are days when you do administrative work or work generated from your focus days.
· Free days—NO WORK—not even checking voice mail or email. You need this down time so your subconscious can create on the focus days.
When you identify your genius work and clear the way for it to take up the largest percentage of your time, you become a more efficient, prosperous person and business.
The bottom line, success comes through cultivating success habits and habits don’t change unless you change your behavior, your actions. You’ve got to act on change to lock it in.
