Self-Discipline

Okay. We’re nearly two weeks into the start of a new year. How are you progressing on your well intentioned New Year’s resolutions? Have you been taking consistent action, or have you found yourself already finding excuses to not take those daily steps that methodically get you to your goal?

First, tell yourself the truth and be certain you really WANT this goal; that it isn’t something you think you SHOULD do. Only promise yourself something you intend to produce.

If you started this year fully intending to produce the result you want, you probably at this moment have sufficient energy to begin moving toward the goal. Most of us know what we need to do to reach it, but give it up after a short period of time. Why? Lack of self-discipline. It’s fairly easy to employ self-discipline for short spurts of time, but the success of any goal is the willingness to stay with methodical, purposeful action, little by little, day by day, until the goal is attained.

The really big payoffs in life come from dedication and consistency to self-disciplined action. It’s easier to work as little as possible, to not manage your time well, to overeat, watch more TV. When that little voice says, “Give it up”, “I quit”, “It’s more work than I want to do”, remember that what is easy, also has little payoff. Self-discipline is short term pain for long term gain, whereas procrastination is short term gain for long term pain. You are responsible for which price you want to pay. Disciplined efforts pay higher dividends in terms of a rewarding life. This is your life! It is not a dress rehearsal. As you discipline yourself toward your authentic goals, those that define who you truly are in the world, watch your efforts multiply into esteemed experiences for you.

**Coaching**
If the goal seems too big, make sure it’s attainable and then break it into smaller pieces. Little steps, day by day, will create momentum and reward you with small wins along the way to keep you motivated and fresh.

To bring any goal to achievement, you must take the responsibility for the results. Disciplined action is how you display this responsibility. Time and again, this is why people hire me or any coach. They know that only disciplined action will bring results. Most people can begin the process toward achieving their goal, but when the buzz wears off, a masterful coach can elicit renewed action using people’s inner motivation rather than outside pressure.

Self-discipline is the stuff of achievers, of personal successes that lead to a high self-esteem.
