Gratitude and New Beginnings
Typically at this time of year, I find myself thinking, uck! Another holiday season to spend more money than I have, fight crowds at the mall (this is really difficult for me as I rarely leave my mountain home and community to cope with Denver traffic), attend social obligations that I need like a hole in the head, and family complications that drain every last ounce of energy I have.
For some odd reason, I am looking forward to this season! Delving deeper into the mystery of this uncommon seasonal cheerfulness, illuminates the reason for this sparkle. I’ve worked hard to cultivate habits that fill me up from the inside.
*~Extreme self-care and choice~* I put myself first. The paradox of this modus operandi is that the more I nurture myself, the less I feel pulled by my roles and the more I find myself being generous because I can afford to be. I’ve learned to set boundaries, amend my priorities and say no to situations that don’t align with those priorities. I do what I need to nurture myself first and foremost. If I sense resentment at any level, I look deeper and ask what’s driving this? My need to be approved of? Someone else’s agenda for me? I want to get clear about my motivation so that my choice is driven by what fills my soul and aligns with my values.
This is the responsibility of choice. I no longer guilt myself into commitments that take from joy. The commitments I do take on, I take them on knowing the consequences, realize it’s my choice and stop complaining. The principle message in people’s real excuses is that they think they have no choice about how they spend their time. That’s where they are mistaken; believing the lie that they have no choice.
*~I’m grateful for what I do have and for what is working in my life~* Are there things I still want to change? Absolutely! I have been practicing this past year to look at what is right in my life rather than complain about how things aren’t the way I want them. It’s a combination of taking responsibility for my choices, taking right action, and being thankful and appreciative for what I do have. This was a particularly difficult journey for me, as I had gotten myself into a negative tailspin that culminated in an insidious habit of looking at what wasn’t right. Counting my blessings leaves me with a sense of wonder, thankfulness and appreciation for my loving partner, the friends that nurture me, the clients that allow me to use my brilliance, the health I enjoy. I’m a happier person today than I have been in years because I practice an attitude of gratitude.
Take 5 minutes each night for two weeks and write down 5 things you are grateful for that day: waking up, the generosity of a friend, your persistence, the street lights that all turned green as you entered the intersection.
*~Consider making Lifetime Resolutions—those pledges you make to yourself to elicit greatness through perfecting something about yourself, increasing awareness or transcending your current state~* Rather than launching into a myriad of new goals at the start of the New Year, how about taking the time to look over the past year and ponder where you might want to take your life, not just set goals.
Examples of lifetime resolutions:
I am committed to a lifetime journey of significance through weekly personal development reading and journaling.
I commit myself to excellent self-care--adequate sleep, diet, exercise and pampering for the rest of my life.
I commit to discovering what is really important to me through defining my purpose, vision and mission.
I’m living this season differently than I have in the past. Through challenging old ways of thinking and practicing new ways of being in life, I have found my passion, I’m clear about my values, and I stand on a solid foundation that gives me the desire and confidence to live life on my terms. This makes me grateful and joyful this season.
