Right Questions: The Key to Effortless High Performance
Effortless high performers ask very different questions of themselves than do less productive people. These questions engage their intuitive nature and are important to helping those who use them identify opportunities that others may view as problems. It’s the distinction between a worldview of depletion and shortage or surplus and abundance.
How do we switch from a view of depletion and shortage to one of surplus and abundance? We ask ourselves WHAT’S RIGHT vs. WHAT’S WRONG questions. Problems disappear faster when we discipline ourselves to search for the inherent value or opportunity in everything.
Effortless high performers place far more emphasis on questions than on answers. This reduces their stress and brings their visions of the ideal into focus. They choose positive, right questions that balance their intuition with their rational mind to bring about opportunities and abundance. They have a “can’t lose” perspective on life.
Kurt Wright, in his book, “Breaking the Rules: Removing the Obstacles to Effortless High Performance”, offers his model of five RIGHT questions to stimulate highly productive and positive results.
1. “ What do I know that is already right or working?” Ninety percent of the population sees this as a dismissal question; if it’s already working, why waste energy thinking about it? This is a depletion/shortage point of view. The intent of this agenda setting question is to identify something that is working so well, it deserves further study.
2. “What is it that makes it right?” This is really the three-year-old’s version of “why”. It’s a wonderful insight-generating, energy-producing question.
3. “What would the ideal look like?” This question requires so much energy that those who operate in the depletion/shortage mode seldom even consider asking it. Running continually on this level of “what’s right” is the ultimate secret of effortless high performance. Thoroughly examining the first two questions will generate the energy required to go this deep.
4. “What’s not yet quite right?” is the gap-defining question. Most people will resort to thinking WHAT’S WRONG again. Visionary leaders and high performers use this question to more precisely define the unknown to attract the perfect solutions to support an ever-evolving vision of the ideal.
5. “What resources can I find to make it right?” This is the natural follow-on question and serves as an excellent focusing question to bring on constructive action.
As we become proficient with asking WHAT’S RIGHT questions, we learn to celebrate the times we get “stuck”. It’s these times that remind us that we are slipping back into the mode of asking WHAT’S WRONG questions, or have given a negative connotation to some fact or situation we are facing. Going back to WHAT’S RIGHT questions will renew our energy and help to get us unstuck.
Right questions are value-finding questions. I recently felt stuck in my work and where I wanted to take my practice. My energy plummeted as I pondered the “problem”. Creativity and the motivation to act were gone. Embarking on the soul-searching process of WHAT’S RIGHT questioning, energy was soon rejuvenated and my vision became crystal-clear.
Visionary leaders and effortless high performers use this model of WHAT’S RIGHT questioning. Fred Smith, chairman and founder of Federal Express, when hearing Kurt Wright describe his “cascading hierarchy” of WHAT’S RIGHT questions, remarked, “This is the first time in my life I have ever had anyone describe to me the exact thought process I used to build this company.”
Personally and in the office, once you replace your culturally conditioned habit of faultfinding and replace it with the new discipline of value finding, you will eagerly approach self-examination as a process of building strength, bringing your ideal to reality.
