The Adrenaline Lifestyle
What a powerful drug we were born with! Adrenaline gives you the extra burst of energy to handle deadlines and all those crises we have in our lives. For 1.6 million years, this “flight-or-fight” response has been hard-wired to give us strength, stamina and speed when we needed it, such as dealing with sudden danger. But, our bodies haven’t changed at all in the last 25,000 years, everything else has.
Many of you use adrenaline the same way you use caffeine, as a way to get through the day at high performance. The truth is, that using too much adrenaline weakens your body and over time drains your energy. Why do you think you feel a tremendous down after spending the whole day charged up?
Humans will go to any length to get the quickest and easiest source of energy. Often, you set up your life to keep getting the adrenaline. You put yourself in situations where you “have” to perform. You create dramas so you’ll be “forced” to give yourself that extra boost of energy. Adrenaline rushes help you to blast through difficult times. This habit can become a lifestyle that keeps you moving too fast and out of focus. You drive harder and move faster just to keep the adrenaline high. You tell yourself it’s because you have to. The truth is, you’re addicted to adrenaline. The adrenaline junkie creates crises just for the rush.
For those of you who immediately said you don’t have a problem with being “over” adrenalized, take a closer look. Do people ever say these things about you?
· Boy, is he on all the time. How does his wife take it?
· I know she listened to what I said, but I don’t think she heard me.
· You can always count on Jayne to be late. That’s just how she is.
· Michele is always busy. What is she always doing?
· Susan works too hard. What’s with her?
· Why does George put himself through all the stress? He must like it.
· Brian always says he works best under pressure, but why is he including us?
How do you break the adrenaline habit?
· Reduce caffeine and sugar: It’s a tough one, but the rewards are phenomenal! My heavy caffeine days were like a roller coaster, with peaks of creativity and alertness alternating with mental fog and profound fatigue. Having reduced my caffeine intake dramatically , I am now sailing through the day with consistent energy and clarity. The most important benefit of being caffeine free is an improved attitude--more optimistic, energetic and happy! A great book on the topic of toxicity of caffeine is Caffeine Blues by Stephen Cherniske.
· Deliberately underpromise deadlines: Exceeding expectations is not about overpromising, it’s about underpromising and overdelivering.
· Leave 15 minutes earlier than you normally would for every appointment.
· Cut out all non-essential projects/activities.
· Expand your boundaries: Get rid of everyone else’s shoulds and have-to’s.
· Stop believing you can pull it off and give yourself time to do the task: You may get charged up on adrenaline because you believe you work well under pressure. You’ve trained yourself to be the champion and stay up until 3am to get it done. You probably do okay under pressure and you’re such an achiever that your okay work is better that everyone else’s. But it’s not your best work, and you’re fooling yourself if you think it is.
· Build a system to support your desired lifestyle: Feeling overcommitted is an indication that you failed to build a system for what you have, what you do and who you are.
The challenge with adrenaline is that you burn out over time. You tend to have high cycles of energy before you crash, so you feel you can’t stop. With the adrenaline lifestyle you lose the control and freedom you so desperately want in your life.
Are you living the adrenaline lifestyle?
