Get Complete
For many of us, September seems like the beginning of a new year. Memories of our school semesters continue to shape our outlook and rhythms. There is new meaning in goals and busyness abounds as we harvest the fruits of our labors.
This time of year I aspire to construct an environment that will warmly and peacefully support me in the upcoming Autumn and Winter months. I want to nestle in cleanly, and unsullied by “incompletions”—those things that we do not feel complete with in life. Incompletions, like a broken toaster or a broken promise, can drain large amounts of energy and focus from our life.
Coaching
When you don’t complete things, you drain your energy of the precious attention needed to create personal and business success.
· Clean out your basement, closets, drawers, office, attic, garage and car. Anything that is broken or doesn’t work, fix it, give it away or throw it away.
· Balance your checkbook and find out exactly where your money is going.
· File papers. I’ve had clients who have had piles and piles of papers in their office. They don’t even know what’s in there, but they’re certain that they’ll need them some day. They collect years of stuff that’s never filed away. File it, or get rid of it!
An easy system is the three basket system. This system works well at home and in the office. Get three stack trays, one is labeled “in”, one “pending”, one “out”. Everything that comes in goes in the in-basket. Once a day you go through the in-basket until nothing is left with these rules attached to it:
1. If it can be done in 10 minutes, do it now, such as phone calls, memos, filing. Go through the pile one thing at a time.
2. If it takes more than10 minutes, do it, delegate it or dump it.
3. If you intend to do it but it takes research or project time, put the item in a pending file labeled by category (e.g., marketing, article ideas, personal, or file by month). This allows you to schedule time to work on it without taking space or energy until you get to it.
· Complete broken agreements, that is, agreements you haven’t kept with yourself or others. Broken agreements block energy, cut off trust, and undermine self-esteem. Telling friends you’ll get together but never do, borrowing a book but never returning it, promising to help on a project but not following through are all broken agreements.
--Acknowledge that you have a broken agreement
--Apologize
--Recreate the agreement, complete it or negotiate and tell the person you don’t intend to complete it.
Life moves forward by doing one thing at a time. Break big steps into little tiny steps and you can make progress in your life.
Now, rather than things taking up energy and space, your life starts to be orderly and you get completion. I’m not suggesting that you need to be neurotically orderly or compulsive, but there is a level which your environment supports you rather than pulls energy away from you
Coaching Challenge
Are you finally ready to let go of this drain?
Complete an area or issue for yourself, either tangibly or symbolically. Fix broken items, get rid of clutter, organize your surroundings. Write a letter to a person from your past to cleanse yourself of the experience and burn it in symbolism, or, call them on the phone and have a conversation to complete the wrong.
The idea is that you feel complete, nothing is left undone. You will know what action to take once you uncover the incompletion.
