Attitude Management-It's All in Your Head
Attitude is your outlook about something, someone, life or yourself. Your attitude defines how well you are lined up with the truth, reality, and your goals.
Managing your attitude means to rid your mind of limiting, negative, and nonproductive thoughts.
Know Where You Naturally Come-From
What is your natural outlook when you think about or relate to life? (Naturally means how you feel before having a drink, a cup of coffee, a win, etc.) Most likely, it falls between life sucks or life is great.
Almost everyone looks forward to weekends, but hates Mondays. But Saturdays and Mondays are no different than any other day. The sun comes up, the sun sets. The weather is sunny or its stormy. Each day has the same number of hours. The main difference is that you work on Mondays and you dont work on Saturdays. The day doesnt change, your attitude towards it does.
Its all in your head. Our view of events contributes to our ability to cope with changes and stress: with a positive view we can transform stressful events into manageable or desirable situations rather than ignoring or avoiding issues and situations.
Change Your Self-Talk
Garrison Keillor wrote, Sometimes you need to look reality in the eye, and deny it. In other words, you need to talk to yourself encouragingly, productively, and constructively. What you think of yourself and what you tell yourself are what will determine your fate. You have the power over your attitude.
Approach Stress Positively
In their book, The Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner site that high stress/low illness executives tend to make these assumptions about themselves:
· They feel a strong sense of control, believing they can beneficially influence the outcome of what is going on around them through their own efforts. Tumbling into powerlessness, feeling like a victim seems like a waste of time to these people.
· They are strong on commitment. They believe they can find something in whatever they are doing thats of interest or worthwhile. They are unlikely to engage in denial or feel bored or empty.
· They feel a strong sense of challenge, believing that personal improvement and fulfillment come through the continual process of learning from both negative and positive experiences. They feel it is nonrealistic and illogical to expect or wish for easy comfort and security.
Hardy people take change, turmoil, risk and life in stride. They consider stress engaging, because they feel they can influence the outcome and see it as an opportunity for development.
Adopt a Whats Right Discipline
Fortunately, there is a simple and effective way to maintain control over our attitude. Its the discipline of approaching every person, issue, or situation we encounter with a whats right mode of inquiry rather than whats wrong. This is easier said than done and takes practice putting it to work in our lives to learn that its not about avoidance of the negative but rather looking for the positive in the situation.
Choices
Any attitude we hold represents a choice we make about how to view our world and how we wish to be involved in it. The truth is, we each have total control over our attitude; the way in which we approach our world. We have a choice between analyzing and evaluating the potential for all kinds of things to harm us, or to realize the intrinsic value in every situation and what positive possibilities can come from it.
A value finding attitude puts emphasis on finding and bringing out the best in ourselves, other people and every situation we encounter. It leaves behind our old fear based attitudes that keep our attention all tied up in analyzing whats wrong. A value finding attitude represents a choice to focus our thinking on finding opportunities and creating desired outcomes.
So many things can happen in a day to discourage us if we view them as obstacles. But when seen as opportunities, we can use them as stepping stones to success. Wise people do not stop their efforts of forward motion with blame, nor do they fall into a lump of despair. Instead, they chose to accept difficulties and continue performing their tasks regardless. Victorious people understand that it makes no difference how they are feeling at the moment, who is aligned with them or how the outcome is viewed by others. They see an opportunity for improvement and advancement, for a movement toward win/win.
