Are You Juggled Out?
Balance is a natural state; a life full of what is important to you. When you’re balanced, you consistently perform yet not at an emotional cost. Juggling means effort is being expended to keep things from crashing. The client who’s juggling may need to drop a few balls in order to accomplish balance.
What gets the majority of your time and attention? What are you missing out on or putting on hold because of your current lifestyle?
Many people think success in one area of life can compensate for deficiencies in others. Maybe, for awhile. But can success in your work compensate for declining health, a traumatized relationship or compromised honor? Leading a balanced life means that you aren’t neglecting areas that are important to you such as your emotional/physical health, family and quality relationships, spiritual well-being, professional development, fun and leisure.
Balance is different for everyone. I don’t mean to imply that all areas be equal, rather that your needs are met in a healthy way and that you build a reserve of energy and time without burning out. When life is not a chore or struggle anymore, it is in balance.
Time and again, my clients hire me because they are tired of juggling and want to build a solid foundation for fulfillment in life. They’re entangled with projects, goals, ideas commitments and obligations. Initially, we may work to toss out all that isn’t important to them. They decide with the support of coaching, which activities enliven them and will give them the most return on their investment. They work towards simplifying so that the juggling becomes smooth and natural. Eventually, they are ready to make the changes needed for progressive thinking and a balanced, high-quality life.
Try this exercise to discover where you might want to introduce more balance in your life.
The Wheel of Life
adapted by Dr. James S. Vuocolo, c. 1998
1. Draw a large circle on paper.
2. Divide it into sections that correspond to your life, e.g. Family, Friends, Health, Wealth, Career, Environment/Space, Children, Time, Recreation, Romance, Spirituality, etc.
3. Score/Rate each section on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest rating - closest to the outer edge of the wheel; and 1 being the lowest rating - closest to the center of the wheel).
4. Write out a description of what a score of 10 would look like for you in each section or area of life.
5. Place an asterisk (*) next to the 2 - 4 areas that really “resonate” with you at this particular point in life. These are the areas to focus on for the 60 to 90 days with your coach.
A coach can help.
“I never cease to be amazed at the power of the coaching process to draw out the skills or talent that was previously hidden within an individual, and which invariably finds a way to solve a problem previously thought unsolvable.” John Russell, Managing Director, Harley-Davidson Europe, Ltd.
