What’s Draining You?
September, 2002
What’s draining you: disrespect from a co-worker, an unhealthy relationship, something in your physical environment? Energy drains are like holes in your foundation where your energy seeps out. All that good energy draining out of you to put up with things that you could eliminate!
Every action you take uses energy--life energy that allows you to get things done, connect with others and stay emotionally and physically fit. Did you know that actions that you don’t take use precious energy as well? Lack of action breeds mediocrity in work and life by squelching creativity, leaving us tired and drained.
Make a list of 10 things that are draining your energy at home: clutter, unorganized closets, carpets that need shampooing, appliances that need repairing, neighbors that bug you. Then make a list of 10 things that drain your energy at work: a crabby boss, wrong line of work, inadequate pay, lack of opportunity, stress. It is important to write them down even if you don’t know how to resolve them. Identify the pivotal energy drain that when handled, will automatically resolve five more. Get this one on your schedule first so you’ll actually get it done. If you’re like most people I coach, you’re carrying around dozens of things that drain your energy right now.
Often, we rationalize not getting things done through procrastination. You know, all those things we think about taking care of but never seem to get around to? Rather than doing what it takes to eliminate the energy drains, we spend our time obsessing about why we aren’t doing them; going around and around in our head about why we’re not taking care of something. We say things like, “I’ll get around to it tomorrow.” “I’m not in the mood to handle it now.” The more we put off handling energy drains, the more the life-blood is sucked out of us. If we want to be free of these tolerations, we have to eliminate them on a conscious level by making it a point to identify, prioritize, schedule and act. There are some of you who if you scheduled them all, would be jammed for the next three weeks. So be it! Stop complaining and take the action needed to eliminate these items.
Until we rid ourselves of the energy drains, no significant changes can happen. If you don’t want to leave your comfort zone or are afraid, ask yourself, “How is it serving me to hold onto these things that drain my energy?” Then take the action to eliminate them. As you get rid of energy drains, your natural creativity will emerge. You will lighten up. You will have more energy to devote to the quality of your life at work… and at home.
